A study of Family Intervention Progream on alcoholism


Abstract
Alcohosiism has been known as a progressive, relapseable chronic disease and family disease. Many ahcoholics have extensive marital and family problems, and there exists strong clinical and research evidence of reciprocal relationships between family interactions and dysfuctional drinking. It has been recognized that family treatment approaches are very effective intervention of alcoholism. However, according to the research done by the author on the programs for alcoholics which are implemented in Korean psychiatric settings, family treatment approaches are not actively being held yet in Korean.
The goal of this article is to overview the current trends of family intervention programs in order to develop Korean style family treatment. This article reviews three theoretical perspectives on family-involved treatment and 5 family intervention programs. Also 3 family intervention programs are presented to show that various specific family treatment can be used effectively to motivate and initial commitment to changes in the alcoholics; help stabilize the marital relapse and support improvements in the alcoholic¡¯s drinking.
